Bonham Middle School Community,
Bonham Middle School has been underperforming since 2015 - 2016 school year. By the conclusion of the 2019 – 2020 school year, if Bonham Middle School had received five consecutive unacceptable performance ratings, the Commissioner of Education by law, would have been required to order either the appointment of a board of managers to govern the district or closure of the campus. Due to COVID-19, STAAR testing was canceled which led to all districts and campuses receiving a “Not Rated: Declared State of Disaster” for 2019-2020 school year.
As a result of the “Not Rated” status, a pause was placed on the sanctions required by the Commissioner of Education. We currently have two options, we either wait and see this year’s accountability rating or we take advantage of Senate Bill 1882 to find Middle School Turnaround Partner with a proven track record. The Texas Partnership Law which is Senate Bill 1882 went into effect in 2017 to encourage districts to use partnerships to improve student outcomes. The benefit of the Partnership Law is that it provides additional funding for the school and a two-year exemption from specific accountability interventions.
Additionally, we are working to create a Bonham Neighborhood Advisory Council in order to keep you updated as we go through this process and potentially hold informational sessions with potential partners. If you are willing to serve on the Neighborhood Advisory Council, please go the survey to complete question five with your information.
ECISD is committed to improving the school’s performance and making it a great middle school. Thank you for your support!
