    Course Syllabus and Contract

    Course Overview

         The Business Management course is designed to meet and / or exceed all requirements as set by the State of Texas and the educational expectations of rigorous coursework by the Ector County Independent School District.

         The focus is to enable students to perform in entry-level management positions as well as provide a foundation for success in college business courses.

    Topics covered:

    • Management Functions and Decision Making
    • The Manager as Leader
    • Planning and Organizing
    • Implementing and Controlling
    • Financial Records in a Business
    • Financial Analysis of a Business
    • Human Resources Planning
    • Employee Organizational Development
    • Business Ethics

     

         To achieve the expectations of the class and successfully navigate the work, students will have assigned individual work, as well group projects. The assignments, projects, presentations, and activities are designed to mimic both college requirements and real world application.

     

    Class Rules

         The following are the non-negotiable requirements for all courses taught by Mr. Nelms:

      • This is a business class and will be run in the manner of a business which will require students to maintain professionalism.
      • Each student will be respectful of themselves, fellow students, teacher, and guests.
        • Name calling, bullying, degrading remarks, disruptive behavior, refusal to participate or work, etc. are not tolerated – ever.
      • Students are to come prepared and on-time to class with all required supplies.
        • If a student has issues with supplies, please come discuss the issue privately outside of class time.
      • All work must follow the designated format and be turned in before or on the due date and time to have an opportunity to receive full credit.
          • Unless otherwise specified, all work must be type written and may be printed to turn in or emailed (preferred) as an attachment to the teacher.
          • PHS policy for late work:
              • 1 day late = 15 points off
              • 2 days late = 30 points off
              • 3 days late = 50 points off
          • After the 3rd day, the work is given a ZERO
      • Any work containing plagiarism be awarded a ZERO with no exceptions.
      • If caught cheating or helping / enabling another to cheat, the work of both parties will be taken and awarded an immediate ZERO with no opportunity of make-up assignments or dropping the grade.
      • In the event Plagiarism or Cheating has been discovered, a discussion with your parents, den principal, and counselor will follow.
    • Integrity and ethics must be at the core of everything you do… even when no one is watching.

     

      • Restroom breaks, work for other classes, make-up, etc. should be taken care of between classes, before or after school, or during the student’s lunch period, not during class time.
      • Each student will be given 4 restroom passes for the entire semester. No student will be allowed a restroom break without a pass. It is your personal responsibility to maintain and have those passes available for use.
    • No food or drinks will be allowed in the classroom.
    • Cellphone use is not permitted except during times as specified by the teacher.
    • Most importantly, we will have fun in a dynamic learning environment.

     

      

    Required Supplies

         All supplies are required and should be brought to class every day.

    • Black or Blue Pen
    • Pencil
    • 3-ring binder
    • Student Planner
    • Notebook Paper
    • A spiral is approved but must have perforated edges
    • Open Mind
    • Good Attitude
