    PHYSICAL EDUCATION POLICY


    Dear Parents:
    This letter is an attempt to inform you about our Physical Education program at Nimitz Middle School.


    Minimum Standard for Attire:
    A. Students must wear attire that is conducive to a physically active environment.
    a. Students wearing skirts or dress must wear short underneath to allow them to actively engage in the activity.
    B. Street shoes are not appropriate for participation in Physical Education classes. Athletic shoes should be the type that will not damage equipment or the gym floor. Foot wear should be made of soft sole material that will provide traction on the gym floor and physical education field. ABSOLUTELY NO SANDALS/ FLIP FLOPS!!


    Dressing and Participation:
    A. Each student is required to wear appropriate attire.
    a. If a student is not wearing appropriate attire then the student will be given an alternate assignment.
    i. The alternate assignment will be given with a maximum grade of 80.
    B. Each student is required to participate everyday unless properly excused.
    a. A student is excused from participation with a parent’s note that states NO PARTICIPATION.
    b. A parent’s note is only good for one (1) day a week; if the student needs a longer leave then a doctor’s note is required.
    c. Although the student has a no participation note they are still required to complete an alternate assignment/activity and will still have the possibility of gain full credit for the class period.


    C. Discipline Tiers
    a. 1st and 2nd offense students will be redirected to correct behavior, and teacher will discuss the behavior with the student
    b. 3rd offense students will be removed from activity for a time determined by the teacher
    c. 4th offense students will be removed from activity and given an alternate activity as well as a call home to explain to the parent the situation
    d. 5th offense student is removed from activity and given an alternate assignment of a reflective essay over their misbehavior
    e. 6th offense the student will be referred to the office for discipline


    Responsibilities:
    A. Each student is responsible for their belongings.
    a. Students need to secure their binders in their hall lockers.
    i. The physical education department is not responsible for lost or stolen items
    b. If students need to change their shoes they will need to change their shoes at their hall lockers store their shoes in their hall locker to reduce the likelihood they are misplaced.
    i. The physical education department is not responsible for lost or stolen items
    B. No cell phones allowed in the gym or on the students’ person.
    a. If cell phones are seen in the gym the cell phone will be taken up and turned into the office immediately.
    b. The only permissible time is if the activity or project requires the use of technology and the teachers instruction are strictly followed
    C. No classroom materials, bags of any type, or make up will be allowed in the gym. Students will need to place their binders in their lockers for safe keeping, due to the nature of the physical education classroom.


    Grading:
    A. Students will be required to wear attire that is appropriate for a physically active environment.
    a. Each day the students are not wearing attire that is appropriate for the physical nature of the class, that students will be given an alternate assignment with a maximum grade of 80.
    B. A participation grade will make up 45% of the final six weeks average.
    a. The 45% will be earned by being actively engaged in the daily activities.
    i. A rubric will be used to determine the level of participation within the class period.
    C. A equipment grade will make up 35% of the final six weeks average.
    a. The grade will earned by student bring all items needed to be actively engaged in daily activities.
    i. Proper attire
    ii. Proper footwear (athletic shoes)
    D. A unit test/ quiz/ project grade will make 20% of the final six weeks average.
    a. Students will be tested on material covered throughout the six weeks
    i. The tested material will consist of history and rules of games
    ii. Methods of game play
    iii. Health related topics
    b. Students will be given projects to complete within class time
    i. Thinking maps
    ii. Oral presentation
    iii. Group project related to activities
    c. Students will be given written assignments to complete within class time
    i. Individual thinking maps
    ii. Short essays over activities/ games history
    iii. Journal writing over rules, history, activities at home or at school
    EACH STUDENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR KNOWING AND FOLLOWING THE RULES AND REGULATIONS OUTLINED IN THIS LETTER
