Zavala Community & Career Academy
-
Zavala Elementary began as a traditional elementary school when it was opened in 1951. In the 1980's, Zavala became one of ECISD's first choice schools.
Over the course of 25+ years, Zavala's choice focus changed several times. Most recently, in 2018, Zavala became a PreK-2nd grade campus with a focus on Community and Careers.
Travis Elementary is our partner school, offering classes for 3rd- 5th Grades. Zavala students experience a rich curriculum focused on real-world experiences and enrichment through the Community and Career Academy.

Zavala Elementary offers a traditional elementary curriculum following the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) with a focus on reading and math, in addition to a Choice program in which students are able to experience innovation by becoming an "entrepreneur." This hands-on program is geared to equip students with the skills necessary to be successful in an interactive community setting.
-
Course Offerings
Zavala offers traditional core content courses as well as GT classes, Dyslexia services, and special education services for students identified with special needs. As an AVID elementary campus, Zavala also teaches students important organization and study skills at a young age.
-
Extracurricular Opportunities
All Zavala choice students participate in our extended day after-school entrepreneurship program. Additionally, students in the 2nd grade are offered an opportunity to participate in after-school sports.
We also pride ourselves on catering to our families through a number of special events, such as Family Nights for Reading and Math, Polar Express Night, and Field Day. We conduct several family-centered activities throughout the year, such as our Pumpkin Contest, Gingerbread House Contest, and many "make and take" activities.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is there tuition for PreK-4? - Yes, PreK-4 students who do not meet income eligibility requirements will pay a tuition fee.
- Who can stay for Choice classes? - Choice students must meet qualifications and apply through the online application.
- What is your Choice focus? - Community and Career is a program that provides transformative learning experiences for students. Students in Kindergarten through Second Grade collaborate and create a miniature community inside the school walls, complete with their own currency, rules, and economy.
