The STEM Academy is an innovative public, open-enrollment charter school currently located on the UTPB campus. The STEM Academy’s founders began with the intent to ease the transition barriers between high school and post-secondary education and to prepare STEM college and STEM career-ready students. The STEM Academy is dedicated to implementing the newest and most promising practices in education with an emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The foundational belief is that learning should be both engaging and social. Students work collaboratively on challenging curriculum, which, in turn, enables students to experience engaging learning opportunities in order to develop conceptual knowledge and depth through project-based learning (PBL).
Research shows that this type of engaged problem-solving results in a better understanding of concepts and improves cognitive development at all ages. Students learn 21st century skills like communication, research, collaboration, and problem-solving, which are deeply embedded into the PBL environment of the Academy. Teachers work together to design projects lasting usually 3-4 weeks. The projects are designed using the state standards, TEKS and CCMRS, which provide students with the opportunity to not only learn the information required at each grade level but to also be able to put the information into action through real-life simulated projects.

Curriculum
The STEM Academy curriculum and instruction ensures that each grade level exposes students to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) through lessons that allow for skill mastery at their respective grade levels. STEM teachers in conjunction with STEM staff work together to develop lessons that are aligned to the TEKS while addressing student needs. The STEM Academy uses the TEKS Resource System, a K-12 curriculum model designed, maintained, and continuously updated by a collaborative of exemplar educators across Texas, to plan out the instructional academic school year.
Each grade level content has a vetted Year At A Glance (YAG) with TEKS paced into units to match the academic calendar days. Each grade level content has a mix of digital and print resources that are adopted by the state and aligned to the TEKS. The STEM Academy faculty and staff use the YAG documents to plan and pace their projects, lessons, and activities.
The STEM Academy charter is based on project-based learning (PBL) and teaching methodologies. The STEM Academy students use the engineering design process, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking skills every day.
The STEM Academy provides the initial phase of a STEM career pipeline for students, focused on preparing graduates to be STEM College and University Ready and STEM Career ready. The STEM Academy utilizes the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Launch and Gateway programs to provide STEM Career awareness along with the UT program Engineer Your World. Situational learning modules focus on careers in the STEM fields such as: Engineering, Biomedical, and Computer Sciences.
The collaborative efforts of both the university and The STEM Academy have allowed students to experience aspects of being a university student. The STEM Academy students are able to visit various university departments and begin building relationships with professors in their chosen majors as young as elementary age students. These relationships and opportunities with the various departments within the university allow students a taste of what they will be experiencing as a future Falcon.
The STEM Academy’s eligible high school students also enroll in UTPB Dual Credit courses. The Dual Credit program at UTPB allows the STEM Academy students the ability to take university level courses that fulfill both their requirements for high school and college, creating college-ready students with a successful track record in taking university-level courses.
