Welcome to ECISD AVID
What is AVID?
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID’s systemic approach is designed to support students and educators as they increase schoolwide/districtwide college and career readiness.
The AVID Mission Statement
The mission of AVID is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
AVID teaching and learning strategies are embedded in the curriculum with a focus on college and career awareness.
Students build their skills utilizing the following strategies in their multi-subject non-elective classrooms: Organizational Tools, Student Success Skills, Partnerships, and WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading). The utilization of these skills will help students’ preparation for junior high and create a smoother transition as well.
AVID is offered to 7th – 12th graders as an elective course that, like any other class, meets regularly. Each week, students receive two hours of instruction, two hours in tutor-led study groups, and one hour in motivational activities and academic survival skills, including critical reading and writing skills.
AVID students are encouraged to take honors courses (in middle school) and move into dual credit and/or advanced placement courses and/or International Baccalaureate classes in high school.
AVID is a state-approved innovative course, and students in grades nine through twelve receive high school elective credit for the course each year.
How can students get into the AVID elective class?
There is an application process to enter into the AVID Elective class in middle school or high school. Students are asked to share their future aspirations and a commitment to academic success. You can download and print the APPLICATION and WRITTEN INTERVIEW here and return to the AVID Coordinator at your home campus.
