Back to School 2020-2021
On Tuesday, June 16, our Ector County ISD Board of Trustees approved revisions to the 2020-21 academic calendar that will add 11 more instructional days for students. The new calendar also changes the first day of school for all students to Wednesday, August 12. School district leaders believe this to be a critical move to ensure students have more time with teachers during the year, and ample opportunities to overcome learning losses experienced during the school closure and summer break.
In early June, ECISD formed 18 individual committees to study the circumstances and the challenges we will face when opening school in August. The committees are made up of a variety of district and campus administrators, teachers, parents, and some students. The committees are “designing the school day” from beginning to end, taking into account social distancing and other local, state and federal health guidelines. The teams are preparing for three different scenarios - all students returning in-person, no students returning in-person, and a combination or hybrid model with elements of both in-person and remote learning. A hybrid model must align with Texas Education Agency requirements and qualify for attendance guidelines. All three potential scenarios must maintain current staff, address employees' needs, maximize the number of students served, utilize what we have learned since Spring Break to personalize learning, provide structure and flexibility, and easily transition back to an "all schools open" model,
As decisions are made, they will be announced here and shared through ECISD newsletters, social media accounts, and releases to local news outlets.
