    Parents, Students, and Community Partners:

Greetings and welcome to the Odessa Career and Technical Early College High School (OCTECHS). It is a pleasure to have the opportunity to serve our students as they pursue both their high school diploma as well as their associate’s degree simultaneously. We are thankful to the community of Odessa including Ector County Independent School District and Odessa College for your institutional support and leadership in this amazing partnership. This unique partnership will be fostered during the coming months to ensure that OCTECHS students are afforded the full benefits of both institutions.

As we begin this school year, I think it is important to share the OCTECHS Vision:

    • All students will produce quality work
    • All stakeholders will work in cooperative and collaborative relationships
    • Students are self-motivated, independent learners who will seek out their own education
    • Students will transition successfully to the workforce or an institution of higher learningDuring this year, we will focus on working with students on their personal goals and plans for life

We will work to provide students with the knowledge and experiences they need reach their dreams in life regarding their personal and educational aspirations. We know that we must prepare students with four keys to become successful including key cognitive (thinking) skills, key content (knowledge), key learning (ownership) skills, and key transition knowledge (postsecondary awareness) skills (Conley, D.T., 2012).

Therefore, we must ensure that OCTECHS students learn to think critically. We must lead students to produce at even higher levels of quality and not just to be satisfied with meeting minimum expectations. We must encourage our scholars to work collaboratively with their peers in our ever-changing, global society. Finally, we must model for our learners the strength to persevere through uncertain times and equally important, the courage and foresight to navigate failure and celebrate success. What an important opportunity we have in the lives of the young people we serve! I truly look forward to this adventure.

    Sincerely,Gregory C. Nelson, M. Ed.
