Trustees approve initial charter school agreement with Texas Tech

The Ector County ISD Board of Trustees held a special meeting on Thursday evening to consider an agreement with Texas Tech University College of Education for an in-district charter school at Ector Middle School.

Trustees spent approximately 35 minutes in closed session discussing the potential partnership agreement. Trustees then voted 6-0 to approve a Memorandum of Understanding with Texas Tech. Dr. Ray Beaty was absent.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is a general agreement to pursue the partnership. It must still be signed by Texas Tech University and submitted to the Texas Education Agency by Monday’s April 30 deadline. Once the agreement is submitted to TEA, ECISD and Texas Tech will continue working out a more detailed contact for the charter school, which will begin operating in August.

ECISD Trustees will schedule another meeting on Monday in case Texas Tech requests any changes be made to the MOU signed tonight.

The meeting adjourned at 6:42 p.m.
