Education Foundation commits scholarships to aspiring teachers

On September 25, the Education Foundation of Odessa announced changes to its scholarship program aimed at growing our own teachers. The Education Foundation supports scholarship funds at Odessa College and the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. Each year the Foundation gives each institution $50,000 and combined with a 2-to-1 match there is $150,000 at each school available to Ector County ISD graduates.

With the changes in the program, this money is now available to students who are pursuing a teaching degree. The requirements to apply for the scholarships:

  • must be a graduate of an ECISD high school;
  • must maintain a grade point average of 3.0;
  • must be enrolled full time at either Odessa College or UTPB;
  • must volunteer in ECISD classrooms each semester (number of hours vary among institutions);
  • must sign a commitment to teach in ECISD upon graduation

Students can begin applying for the scholarships now. They will be available for the Spring semester, and will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books and a meal plan. Those interested can contact OC or UTPB directly for details on how to apply.

    “The Education Foundation Board of Directors acknowledges that one of the biggest obstacles for Ector County ISD is finding quality educators to fill the 200-plus vacancies it has,” said Education Foundation Director Celeste Potter. “The changes to the Education Foundation of Odessa Scholarship Fund is our small way of helping eliminate that obstacle. We recognize that it will take time, but we are committed to ensuring our students receive the best education possible and that starts with helping the district recruit, train, and retain the very best teachers.”

During the press conference the Education Foundation presented its annual donation of $50,000 to Odessa College and UTPB.
