Voters approve Proposition A with 62% in favor
Ector County voters approved Ector County ISD Proposition A, a tax ratification election that will provide the school district with an additional $18 million in local and state funding this year. In a large turnout, nearly 62% of voters (17,050 unofficially) approved Proposition A.
“This is a great result, and an important time for our school district,” said Interim Superintendent Jim Nelson. “I want to say thank you to the Board of Trustees for having the courage to call for this election. Thank you to our community advisory committee that picked up the cause and carried it out into our community. And thank you to everyone who supported it with their votes.”
A TRE Advisory Group of more than 70 community members worked with school district officials to identify four immediate priority areas for the additional funding. The first, raises for all employees, goes into effect right away and is retroactive to the beginning of this school year. Roof repairs and replacements will be scheduled as quickly as possible, as will the work to install access-control technology at school main entrances, plus fencing. In addition, 39 new buses will become part of ECISD’s fleet.
The community advisory committee began meeting last May and worked tirelessly over the past six months evaluating the district’s needs, helping create this plan to begin addressing these needs, and then taking that message to the community.
“With the growth we have seen, and the growth that is projected these additional resources are crucial to our future,” added Mr. Nelson. “We are honored the community would trust us in this way, and we understand we have a responsibility to carry out this mandate. We have work to do, but believe the future is bright for Ector County ISD.”
