ECISD places 2 Decathlon teams in top 6 at state, 2 individual champions

Ector County ISD and the ECISD the Advanced Academic Services Department, are proud and excited to announce two high school Academic Decathlon teams finished this year among the top six in the state.

New Tech Odessa placed 3rd in the Small School Division at the Thomas E. Mosely Academic Decathlon State Meet led by Rohan Reed who took the Scholastic Gold Medal. Following their impressive 3rd place finish and their numerous individual awards, the NTO team was selected to represent Texas at the USAD Online National Competition. This achievement is a source of immense pride for NTO - one of only two schools selected to represent Texas at the national competitions.

The accolades did not stop there. NTO Coach Damian Gaytan was awarded the Small School Texas Coach of the Year, and OCA’s Baden Seigman was chosen from among 350 contestants to deliver her speech at the Awards Ceremony.

The team from New Tech Odessa won the regional championship in January, as all 9 team members earned at least one medal. Odessa Collegiate Academy placed second in the regional competition with Wright winning the gold medal in 9 categories, taking the regional title as the top varsity scorer for small, medium, and large teams. Both NTO and OCA are part of the small school division and only the top 10 small schools in Texas advanced to the state meet.

ECISD sent four teams to the Region 1 Academic Decathlon Competition in Keller, Texas, on January 26 and 27. NTO and OCA took the top two spots in the small school division, and Permian High School and Odessa High School finished 4th and 5th, respectively, in the large school division.

PHS placed third in the stand-alone team Super Quiz and, by virtue of its overall finish, advanced to the Texas Academic Decathlon Scholarship Competition in Frisco, Texas on February 23-25. The Panthers had a strong showing at state, finishing 16th our of the 26 Large School teams. Abigail Scott won a Gold medal in Speech, Tony Jimenez took Gold in Interview and Silver in Music, William Heuman won Gold in Social Science and Bronze in Literature, and Caleb Carroll earned Bronze in Literature.

"We are proud of the hard work of these four teams and their coaches," said ECISD Advanced Academic Services Director Dr. Kristen Vesely. "All four teams did an outstanding job and showed great improvement from the district competition earlier in the semester."
