Student growth highlighted in board workshop presentations

The Ector County ISD Board of Trustees held its March Workshop on the 19th. A recap of the agenda is below.

  1. Trustees received an update on Results-Driven Accountability (RDA) which monitors three groups of students – Emergent Bilingual, Other Special Populations (such as homeless, foster and military), and Special Education. Under RDA, a lower score is better, and the goal for each performance level is to earn a 0 and determination level is a 1 (meets requirements). The performance levels equate to the final determination level. The Other Special Populations earned a determination level of 3 (needs intervention), in part due to low performance on STAAR Social Studies assessments. Special Education earned a determination level of 2 (needs assistance), in part due to low performance on STAAR Social Studies and Science. Bilingual earned a determination level of 1 (meets requirements). Data show growth across the board for the three student groups when compared to 2022. Before the pandemic, results tracked toward 3s and 4s and now the numbers are moving toward 1s and 2s. This means Emergent Bilingual, Other Special Populations and Special Education students are performing more like their peers across this state in the metrics measured on RDA.

              After the RDA presentation, Trustees received an update from Special Education. Referrals are a primary focus, as more than 700 of them carried over from last year into this year, and another 700 have been requested this year. The District is working overtime to catch up on those referrals investing more than $2 million to contract for diagnostician and licensed specialists in school psychology services to help staff members evaluate students. District leaders are meeting with the Texas Education Agency regularly to monitor the progress.

 

  1. The Curriculum & Instruction Department presented results from the Winter 2024 MAP Assessment. MAP stands for Measure of Academic Progress, and this assessment is given to ECISD students in grades 3-12 three times each year to measure each child’s individual growth from the beginning of the year to the spring semester. This presentation highlighted Middle of Year data from January 2024 compared to the January 2023 tests. Key points: 

1. Kindergarten students continue to show improvement year over year in the Math section.

2. 2nd grade students took a more rigorous 2-5 grade MAP Reading test in 2024 compared to the K-2 MAP Reading test they took in 2023. Despite the increased difficulty, the 2nd grade students showed higher growth rates in January 2024 compared to January 2023.

3. Data for Algebra 2 and Geometry was shared for the first time, indicating a broader scope of assessment or curriculum coverage.

4. The new NWEA Instructional Report is being utilized to target specific skills that require adjustments to instruction, suggesting a data-driven approach to improve teaching strategies and student learning outcomes.
