STAAR scores show some improvement and need for more growth
The results of the 2019 State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) test show areas of growth for ECISD students, and highlight areas that need improvement. District and campus leaders placed an emphasis on increasing students’ performance from the state’s minimum standard called Approaches Grade Level, to the higher achievement standards called Meets Grade Level and Masters Grade Level.
The charts included with this press release show increases in many of the cases. The two sets of charts give two different views of the results. For example, the charts titled Year to Year compare this year’s 3rd grade results on a particular test to last year’s 3rd grade results on the same test.
The second set of results called Cohort Comparison compares this year’s 4th grade results on a particular test to last year’s 3rd grade results on the same test. The Cohort Comparison gives a look at how the same group of students is growing from one year to the next, while the Year to Year comparison is a look at two different sets of students. Green shows gains, yellow indicates scores stayed the same, and red shows drops in performance.
Goal 1 of our district improvement plan is to meet or exceed the state average on all tests by 2024. When considering each of the three standards – Approaches Grade Level, Meets Grade Level, Masters Grade Level – ECISD students gained some ground on the state, in at least of those standards, for Reading in all grades 3rd through 8th; for Math in 5th, 7th, and 8th grade; Social Studies in 8th grade; Science in 8th grade; and the U.S. History End of Course exam.
The state will release accountability ratings in August.
